Take Action

Be a part of the solution! There are many ways to get involved and ensure safe and accessible housing for West Marin’s service workers and community members.

Use your voice to advocate for affordable housing.

Use your voice to advocate for affordable housing in our community, particularly dignified homes for lower-wage workers. Write opinion letters to the editor of the Point Reyes Light, Marin Independent Journal, and other community news outlets to show your support for an economically and racially diverse community with affordable housing. Write to or connect with your Marin County Supervisor’s office to advocate for more proactive action by the County to reduce barriers and advance solutions. Sign up for Marin Environmental Housing Collaborative’s weekly newsletter to stay up-to-date on housing projects and policies coming up for approval before the Planning Commission or Board of Supervisors; advocate in support of them by writing or by attending those meetings virtually or in person.

Shift community attitudes by welcoming more neighbors.

Shift community attitudes by welcoming more neighbors from diverse backgrounds and educating one another about the importance of having safe, quality, affordable housing for a thriving West Marin. Our schools, businesses, towns, community and health centers all depend on it. We need to stem the loss of valuable community members who become priced out of our region. We also need people based in the community who like working in the hospitality and service sectors without long drives on rural roads at all hours and in all weathers. You can help build a movement that shifts the local culture, changes the narrative, and builds public and political will to ensure dignified local homes for lower-wage workers. Community members can self-organize and get involved in shared action for change. Express your interest on Facebook, Next Door, West Marin Commons, etc.

Create homes for neighbors by renting out extra space on your property.

Create more homes for neighbors by renting out extra bedrooms, accessory dwelling units, or other housing on your property. Be intentional and open-minded in your outreach when inviting applications. Explore options for fixing up or building new dwellings on your property. The West Marin Housing Collaborative is looking to restart a Community Rentals Program that helps homeowners rent to local workers and community members. Contact Kim Thompson to express interest in helping with program design and/or offering a place for rent.

Donate for urgent housing action.

Donate for urgent action to the Housing Action Fund. Funds are needed to meet the urgent housing needs of our community members, especially those facing displacement or living in substandard housing. 100% of donations will be used to provide vital safety net services for at-risk households. Our community land trusts are working on longer-term housing solutions and also need financial support! Donate to the West Marin Housing Collaborative by reaching out to Kim Thompson to support permanent solutions.
